Canyonlands National Park - Grand View Point

We begin our adventure cycling from Grand View Point. Grand View Point (6,080ft) is one of the most popular places to see in Canyon Lands National Park, taking a van to the end of the road and Grand View Point before bicycling all the out of the park. The views over the canyons are beautiful. The Colorado River to the east and Green River to the west have carved and shaped the scenery into an endless view of the canyons. Viewing from the Grand View Point Section of the park, we understand where the park gets its name: Canyonlands Nation Park and the largest national park in Utah. The park is divided into four different districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze and The Rivers. We will bicycle from the end point of Grand View Point all the way to the end of the park then make a right turn at the Moab Giants Dinosaur Park. The Dinosaur Park ($24.00), one of the top Moab area attractions, includes a 3D cinema where visitors view a film that teaches them about the prehistoric world of dinosaurs. After the film, visitors can walk through the park where they will see state-of-the-art life-size replicas of dinosaurs.

Breakfast provided by the hotel each morning.

Bicycling Route: 0 miles, staying at the hotel; or 35 miles, riding to the Dinosaur Turn; or 45 miles riding from Grand View Point back to the hotel. [The first 20 miles from Grand View Point are basically flat with rolling hills and the last 20 miles are a steady descent falling 2200 ft, taking a dedicated bike path for the last 10 miles ]

Arches National Park

On Monday, we see the red rock wonderland that is Arches National Park. After taking the SAG van to the farthest end of the park, we bicycle the entire length of the park. In addition to seeing Delicate Arch and Balanced Rock, we will also bicycle to or near almost every major rock formation and natural formation, including Landscape Arch, Balanced Rock, Windows Section, Delicate Arch, Double Arch, Fiery Furnace and Wolfe Ranch. For everyone who would prefer a little bit closer view of the natural wonders, many of the arches have a short dedicated hike to view the formations up-close. We then bicycle out of the park on a dedicated bicycle path back to the hotel.

Breakfast provided by the hotel each morning

Bicycling Route: 0 miles, staying at the hotel; 9 miles, riding from Devils Garden to Delicate Arch or 17 miles, riding from Turret Arch back to the hotel; or 26 miles riding the entire route with a SAG transport connecting Delicate Arch to Turret Arch (there is a steep-no shoulder climb connecting the two areas, so we are transporting everyone to avoid traffic problems.)  [The first 9 miles is a continuous 800 ft descent and second 17 miles descends 1800 feet to the hotel with one gentle climb.]

Optional walking trails: Roundtrip easy/moderate walking trails to see the arches up close including: Sand Dune Arch trail .3 miles; Skyline Arch Trail .4 miles; Broken Arch Trail 1.3 miles; Delicate Arch (Viewpoint) Trail .5 miles; and Delicate Arch (Up-close)Trail 3.0 miles in the northerrn part of the park and Balance Rock Trail .3 miles; Double Arch Trail .5 miles; and Windows Loop & Turret Arch Trail 1.2 miles in the southern part of the park.

Canyonlands National Park - The Needles

Today we bicycle after a SAG van ride to and through the other major section of Canyonlands National Park: The Needles area. We bicycle to the very end of the paved road seeing an entirely different environment and views than from our first day where we were at the top viewing down to transitioning into the valley as we see mountains, fields and rock formations all around, including the famous Wooden Shoe Arch. Many people will stop at the Visitor Center toward the end of the ride. The Needles forms the southeast corner of Canyonlands National Park and was named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that dominate the area.

Breakfast provided by the hotel each morning.

Bicycling Route: 0 miles, staying at the hotel; or 21 miles, riding from the end of the road back to the hotel; or 47 miles riding to the end of the paved road and back to the Visitor Center. [The route begins basically flat for the first 10 miles and then a continuous 2000 ft descent spread over the next 25 miles. The optional 12 miles after the visitor center has two challenging climbs.]

Free Day - Or Ken's Lake

Enjoy your day on your own or bicycle from the hotel through downtown Moab and onto Ken's Lake. The lake can be viewed as a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde situation: Either the lake and beautiful waterfall can be described as an area that is set against the stunning backdrop of La Sal Mountain peaks and Moab Rim red rock, a relaxing beautiful destination just outside of Moab or it may be viewed as an area that was once beautiful and is now an area being recaptured by the desert with a dried-up waterfall and a lake at 25% capacity. The main reason for the differences is the amount of snowfall that was received in the prior year's winter. Either way it is a wonderful bicycle ride destination and great way to view the power of nature and the impact of water.

Breakfast provided by the hotel each morning

Bicycling Route: Free Day or 0 miles, staying at the hotel; or 22 miles, riding to and from Ken's Lake. [Gentle flat ascent of 1000 ft over 11.5 miles on the way to the lake and a 1000 ft descent on the way back]

Colorado River

On our final day, we take a van to the end of the paved road and the Potash Boat Ramp. We then bicycle back to the hotel. The route runs adjacent to the Colorado River. The Colorado River begins in the Rocky Mountains and continues through seven U.S. States and two Mexican States before emptying into the Gulf of California, but the river’s prime stretch is in Utah where it winds into the desert and long ago carved its way through the state. The Colorado River no longer reaches the sea, but runs dry in the Mexican desert. On our ride we can see the former power of the river as we ride and look-up to see the mountains that now form a valley cut-out with vegetation and animal life on either side.

Breakfast provided by the hotel each morning.

Bicycling Route: 0 miles, staying at the hotel; or 21 miles, riding from the Potash Boat Ramp area back to the hotel. [The route is mainly flat for the first 17 miles with one hill and then a descent back to the hotel.]
